The act of turning a page can itself be redesigned.
Conventional notebooks follow linear writing, page-turning in one fixed direction, and the logic of traditional bookbinding. The ReBound series challenges these constraints and treats the act of turning a page as an experience to be designed. By working with different binding methods, paper structures, and page-turning trajectories, it rediscovers how a notebook can be used and what it can become.
I made this set of notebook prototypes in the Product Environment (プロダクト環境) course during my exchange at Musashino Art University. The name ReBound plays on "re-bound": bound again. The prototypes are made of white paper and silver wire coils; the same materials, bound in different ways, become six different ways of turning a page.
ChainNotes | Linked notebooks
Several independent notebooks are linked together as modules, offering a continuous, flexible writing experience whose content can keep expanding. Each coil connects to the next notebook, so they can run in a line or close into a ring.
HelixNote | Spiral-track notebook
Pages turn along a conical wire track. The unusual diagonal motion creates a visual and tactile rhythm that makes turning a page feel distinctive.
Progression | Progress-bar notebook
The coil is longer than the notebook. With every page turned, the whole structure shifts a little further to the right, acting as a visual progress bar so you can see at a glance how far you have written.
DualHold | Double-bound notebook
Bound on both the left and right and turned sideways, the notebook can be fixed onto all kinds of objects, widening the ways it can be used.
360°Note | Circular notebook
Pages are arranged a full 360° around a ring-shaped coil, so you can write from any angle: reading and writing with no clear beginning or end. As the sheets open outward one by one, they surround the centre like rays of light.
Offset | Offset-bound notebook
The punch holes on each page are deliberately shifted, so the page edges form a stepped visual index that makes content quick to find.
At the end of the presentation I summed up the series in five verbs: Write. Fold. Link. Shift. Repeat.
